Criteria to Qualify for the Live-In Caregiver Program

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the Live-In Caregiver Program, you must have met the following criteria before applying:

Job Offer

A valid job offer from a Canadian employer to work as a live-in caregiver.

Education

A secondary school education equivalent to Canadian standards.

Language Skills

Proficiency in English or French to communicate effectively in the household.

Work Experience

At least six months of training or at least one year of full-time paid work experience as a caregiver or in a related field.

Pathway to Permanent Residency

Live-in caregivers who meet the eligibility criteria can apply for permanent residency through one of the following pathways:

Caring for Children Pathway

For caregivers who have provided full-time child care in a private home in Canada for at least two years.

Caring for People with High Medical Needs Pathway

For caregivers who have provided full-time care for the elderly or people with disabilities in a private home in Canada for at least two years.

Support for Employers

Employers in Canada must meet specific requirements to hire a live-in caregiver, including:

Employment Contract

Providing a detailed employment contract outlining job duties, hours of work, wages, and working conditions.

Wages and Benefits

Offering fair wages and benefits in accordance with provincial or territorial employment standards.

Accommodation

Providing suitable live-in accommodation at no cost to the caregiver.

Transportation Costs

Covering the caregiver's transportation costs to Canada.
