Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible to sponsor a family member, you must:

No Outstanding Obligations

Have no outstanding sponsorship undertakings, immigration loans, performance bonds, or court-ordered support payments.

Financial Stability

Demonstrate the ability to financially support the sponsored family member(s) and ensure they do not need social assistance from the government.

Undertaking Agreement

Agree to provide financial support for your sponsored family member(s) for a specific period (typically 3 to 20 years, depending on the relationship and age of the sponsored person).

Status

Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada.

Age

Be at least 18 years old.

Undergo a medical examination and be in good health.

Security Clearance

Obtain police certificates and pass background checks.

The Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Program allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents and grandparents for permanent residency. Due to high demand, this program has a limited intake and often uses a lottery system to select sponsors.
